DAMN DRZ400S '07- 1.2 million questions

Post by mica »

The Good- I OWN A DUAL SPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bad - I need to change some stuff and I don't know crap about such things.

I was really looking for a DR 650 because I wanted something more road worthy than dirt worthy but the price on this was too good to pass up, really.

Mods already on bike that I need to change.

front sprocket- was changed to 1 less tooth. I want to install original back, for road worthyness. I think if I have the right tools I can figure this out but if you have any advice, I am all ears.

The FMF pipe- this must save a lot of lives because it is LOUD! I am a mechanical dumb dumb but should there be black marks from the exhaust on the rear of the bike. I'm not convinced the guy has this setup right to begin with. it backfires too when you let off the throttle.

Anyway, again I think I can swap out the pipe, have original, but then don't I need to do something with carb also? There is a Dyno Jet kit installed, will I need to put the original 'whatevers' back on the carb?

Recommendation for a mostly street oriented tires?

Nope it's straight forward just hold the rear brake and use a breaker bar once you push the metal flats down.

The FMF pipe is pretty quiet... Does it have the quiet core installed? Does it still have a stock header pipe on it? Otherwise you'll need to replace the stock one back again. Personally I'd look at leaving the pipe on their and repacking it. The stock muffler is heavy and the DRZ is a dog specially on the street with stock gearing so it needs all the help it can get. You might just need to repack the muffler.
Anyway, again I think I can swap out the pipe, have original, but then don't I need to do something with carb also? There is a Dyno Jet kit installed, will I need to put the original 'whatevers' back on the carb?
Yes you'd need to rejet it again.

Personally dude I'd be looking at leaving the pipe on their, installing the quiet core if it doesn't have it already and start looking for an FCR carb because it makes a _huge_ difference.

I also agree to keep the exhuast, don't put stock back on. Check for a quiet core or some sort of "quiet tip" if you think its too loud.

Too bad you couldn't find a 650, but the DRZ's are pretty nice and in a lot of ways they are better. There is a lot more used parts/aftermarket parts for the DRZ's. Start looking for a second wheelset!

i think the backfiring is lean fuel mixture and smog stuff, when i removed smog stuff and jetted up my xr650L backfiring on decel stopped....just my 2 cents
+1 on keeping pipe repack it/ performance and weight savings is a good thing...also try Thumpertalk.com for technical help, youll be able to find DRZ specialists there. Welcome aboard the DAMN group :roost:

The back firing is normal on closed throttle decel it indicates proper jetting _for the most part_.

If it doesn't backfire at all on closed throttle it's probably to rich on the pilot circuit.

Some other suggestions:

Do get the MCCT
Do get case savers (these will get busted in some little bullshit tip over with out them.)
Do get radiator guards (guards are 70 bucks radiators are 300 a side)
Either replace the steel handle bar now, or after your first crash.
Bark busters to keep your levers from snapping are a pretty smart idea too.

Here's my drz:

If you are in the area and want to try it to see what the FCR feels like let me know.

Regarding the pilot circuit, ultimately, your just looking for a crisp off idle response; one that doesn't feel "airy" (lean) or "flat" (rich). Difficult starting can also indicate an improper pilot circuit jetting.

Way better suspension to.

Suzuki needs to make a DRZ650 to replace the DRZ400. Water cooled 650 with cartridge forks and a nice shock.

Then replace the DRZ400 with a DRZ450 which in a perfect world would basically be an RMZ with a dual sport kit on it, milder cams, 18" rear wheel and a heavier flywheel.

When I piped and jetted my drz400sm before I got the fcr39 carb (worth it - check Thumpertalk and look for posts by Eddie "Burned" Sinerous) I had to pull the snorkel from the top of the air box for it to run right... Do you know if this has been done - basically if there is a rubber boot at a 45 degree angle on the top of the air box - it will pop right out and allow you to more air... If you do the carb swap you will most likely pull this anyway and cut a 3x3 hole in the top of the airbox..

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was wrong. I didn't have the know how to change the front sprocket. :) Luckily someone helped me out. Big difference. I love it.

After riding around like a Hooligan with the guy that helped with the sprocket(DR 650), his bike was equally loud and added to the hooliganism :whoop: , I think I like the loud pipe :roost: , though I probably will repack it.

The decel pop is driving me nuts though. I really want to do as little as possible to get this straightened out. No skills or money.

Would putting the stock filter back on choke up enough air to richen the mix?

Current rear tire is 120/90-18. I am looking to put a street tire on, can I put a 130 on the rear?

Guess I'll find out how much the stock seat sucks tomorrow, er... today. Heading to OC from Manassas, VA. wish me luck...

Do you have the FMF power core or the FMF quiet core?

My DRZ pops like a mofo. It's 100% normal. You could try turning the fuel screw out a 1/4 to half a turn but I'd leave it be.

The pops will grow on you it as you said "add's the hooliganism"

It's a 2.15" rim a 130 works best with a 2.5" rim on the small side. Going to a bigger tire on the 2.15" rim would make the tire more v shaped something you want to avoid. I doubt you'll notice a difference between the 2 of them.

I didn't find it that bad but I read pedal bikes too.
