I'm struggling with what color to use in place of the baby blue background you see all over the place.

This light color sucks. With the mud template in place, only the edges and around the banner are brown, everything else is white/blue still.

rather than a "it sucks" how about a "change the ___ to ___"?

what colors would you use?

I like the darker colors, similar to the advrider forum (crash template).

I'll respond better to something like "ditch the baby blue and use dogshit brown."

The main page looks pretty good, but the sub forums are still blue and hard to read. Also, on the main page, when you put your mouse over the sub forums, it highlights the whole line as yellow and it's hard to read the white text with the yellow background.

Hang in there - I have a lot of tweaking to do to get to a stable place from the last changes

The new forum is obviously made by someone who runs trials tires, the forum is spinning from gayness.
