Re: Let's talk woods bike options
SX is like Supercross, EXC is like enduro cross country. I don't know that that is what they stand for, but that's my mnemonic.
Thanks,
Patrick

This is one I'm looking at...it's an SX with 19" rear and a bit taller, geared and tuned for MX,.
Can it be a woods bike? Add a FWW, change sprockets. Is an 18" rear $$?

Re: Let's talk woods bike options
I think the XC class of bikes are the woods bikes.
MOTOCROSS (SX & SX-F) CLOSED COURSE MOTOCROSS RACING
• Highest output engine for MX racing
• MX suspension: closed-cartridge fork with linkage rear
• 19˝ rear tire, billet triple clamps, SX fuel tank
CROSS COUNTRY (XC & XC-F) CLOSED COURSE CROSS COUNTRY RACING
• Highest output engine for XC racing, based on SX
• Cross Country suspension: closed-cartridge fork with linkage rear
• 18˝ rear tire, billet triple clamps, large fuel tank, XC transmission
ENDURO (XC-W & XCF-W) SINGLE TRACK ENDURO RACING
• Specifically-tuned engine for enduro racing
• Enduro suspension: open-cartridge fork with PDS rear
• 18˝ rear tire, large fuel tank, wide-ratio transmission
DUALSPORT (EXC & EXC-F) THE ULTIMATE STREET-LEGAL DUAL SPORT
• Specifically-tuned engine for dual sport enduro racing
• Enduro suspension: open-cartridge fork with PDS rear
• Street-legal 18˝ rear tire, large fuel tank, wide-ratio transmission
MOTOCROSS (SX & SX-F) CLOSED COURSE MOTOCROSS RACING
• Highest output engine for MX racing

I'll defer to Boom Boom, he's spent some time on the bike.dirtygrunt wrote:Longboardr wrote:The fine fellow that leaves me in the dust in the woods on his SX would beg to differ.dirtygrunt wrote:KTM alphabet ---> SX is MX right?

I can say I don't like following it one bit, the sound waves coming out the pipe will scramble your melon.
Edit: the bike I was talking about is a 4t.

Re: Let's talk woods bike options
Having owned all variants at one time or another! Here's the skinny
SX-Supercross. YES, very similar to what used to be called MXC. Closer ratio trannies, usually hotter ignition and curves than say a EXC......Stiffer track suspension and usually the 19 inch rear, but not all years. Usually a different head as well with more compression.
EXC-Traditional KTM Enduro bike. Softer suspension specs, wider ratio trannies, lights. Best all around KTM IMO. Since 2007 EXC has been relegated to the DOT legal DS versions of the 450/525 and such. Very similar to XC-W except XC-W has no lights and is not DOT legal.
XC-Cross Country. Close ratio trannies, stiffer suspension and usually the XC gets the top of the line suspension for that year and billet triple clamps and some other small differences. My 200XC 2007 was a hoot and a great bike but man, at 50mph you were screaming that motor due to the tranny ratio's.
XC-W, wide ratio version of the XC without the billet pieces and different suspension specs. Enduro type riding or hare scrambles. Best all around transmission for a do it all bike.
SX can make a great woods bike. Tire choices become limited due to 19 rear size. Motors are hard pulling and fast. I wouldn't do a flywheel at first, ride it. These things are explosive and can be a handful, but I like the fast revving nature of the motor as is.
If you get the SX for a good price, yeah, it would be a fun bike. Is a EXC better? Depends on what you want regarding trans ratio's, tire size but the motor is awesome.
