Western MD inspection, help!
Western MD inspection, help!
I had an appointment with inspection today & just remembered, I need a speedo right? I called the place I was going to get inspected & he said , didn't know if the bicycle speedo ok. He said, "call head quarters." Of course I knew what was coming. Need a permantly fixed odometer for history reporting & speedometer. Am I barking up wrong tree? I cancelled my appointment, should I seek somewhere else? Or seek out a different inspection? chopper friendly type place?

Re: Western MD inspection, help!
I was told during the inspection on my KTM, anything that displays speed and has an odo that does not reset to zero when turned off is sufficient. I passed with a checkmate enduro computer.
I did have a copy of the Maryland inspection requirements. If I can find it, I will post a copy.

Re: Western MD inspection, help!
Here is the info concerning the speedometer, I do not see why a bicycle speedo would not work.
Procedures:
Visually inspect speedometer and odometer for operation and legibility. Speedometer shall register speed in miles or kilometers per hour and odometer shall register in miles or kilometers.
Reject Vehicle If:
(1) Speedometer and/or odometer disconnected or inoperable.
(2) Dial and calibrations not legible.
(3) Speedometer does not register speed in miles or kilometers.
(4) Odometer does not register in miles or kilometers.
The complete Maryland motorcycle inspection requirements can be found here http://www.dsd.state.md.us/comar/Subtit ... 11.14.03.*
Have all pertinent chapters printed and with you during the inspection. If your bike meets these requirements, the inspector has no argument.
Good Luck.

Re: Western MD inspection, help!
I was told by local MVA to call head quarters, & that guy at HQ said, must be permantly mounted & mileage not resetable, for mileage records. Makes sense. So I suppose I need to comply to his definition or find a inspection station that considers bike speedos a valid qualification. I got all my lights to work but horn barely works on bike power, but loud with battery charger(110vt source). notice headlight stays bright when horn pressed. ( not a stator output problem?) I have no battery nor rectifier.(horn doesn't like ac?) I will try a rectifier, & last resort add battery. Unless a bicycle squeeze horn passes.

Re: Western MD inspection, help!
Does your bike have a speedo cable connecting to an "enduro style" miles only speedo? If so, just replace it with a real speedo. If not try one of the newer computers. Vapor or something. They use magnets on the wheel.
You can also get rechargeable 12v nicad batts and run horn and other stuff from that.

Yes, presently have factory odo & cable. I'll have to break down & get one of those little Baja speedos. I was just hoping to get all done so I could ride with mdubya's event Saturday.
.
On Edit; Just noticed in statutes/regulations, "chain guard is required only if originally equipped" Hmmmm

Thanks so much. I'm new to area & without a tag, dont know too much about area, yet. Went back to mountain ridge once more & a group from our church is going back again today. But I cant make it and trying to save my bike for inspection. (didn't want to crash & brake off lighting, untill after inspected)

Re: Western MD inspection, help!
This turned out to be excellent advice. The inspector initially flunked my bike for not having a chainguard and for the speedo not working. I told him I had just read the rules before going there and the rules say it only has to be on if the bike had one originally. Which obviously an MXC did not. He reread the rules and agreed with me.jgreene wrote:...Have all pertinent chapters printed and with you during the inspection. If your bike meets these requirements, the inspector has no argument.
Good Luck.
Then the service writer helped me fix the speedo. My speedo battery was dead and I left my tools at the office. So he let me borrow a screwdriver and wrench, run across the highway to CVS to score batteries and then passed it. They apparently do a lot of Baja Designs inspections and had no trouble with my kit or an odometer that read zero.
I am still trying to wrap my mind around a bike shop mechanic willing to say I was right and he wrong. After the lousy attitudes I typically get at bike shops, working with Ellicott City Motorsports was great. I can't say enough good about them. They have had my business for several years now and it paid off today. My MXC is inspected.
