Yamaha xt1200z - The super-tenere

Post by Skinny-J » Thu Feb 25, 2010 7:17 am

www.yamaha-motor-europe.com/products/mo ... enere.jsp

Yamaha Europe revealed today (FINALLY!), after drip-feeding info for months. Only available in Europe this year... US misses out on the good stuff again. Yamaha USA have about 14 bloody cruisers in their lineup, but no big dualsports.

It's a direct shot at the GS1200 Adventure, and unfortunately just as heavy, but should be quite a bit cheaper.

Plotting and scheming starts *now* - hmm, may have to move to Europe?

(This was supposed to be in Jomama, don't know how it got it fix-it)

but it (above) just looks like beefed up 660 that we also don't get (bacially shown in the pic is the 660 with a 1200 sticker on it) .. This is going to be aimed at the Honda Varadero and the Vstrom 1000 (which is rumoured to get a facelift) more than the GS...Here is a pic of the new one ... Looks cool but portly

Ok.. I am on the fence about this from all the reading I have done...

It looks like a great "street" bike - but looks at the stats on http://motorcycledaily.com/24february10_stannounced.htm

Wet weight 261 kg.... Yikes -

for comparo

Buell Uly
Weight (wet) 510 lb. (231kg)
Weight (dry) 487 lb. (221kg)

KTM990 Adv
Weight (wet) 517 lb. (235kg)
Weight (dry) 482 lb. (219kg)

Ktm Gs 1200 Adventure
Weight (wet) 581 lb. (264kg)
Weight (dry) 529 lb. (240kg

Suzuki VStrom 1000
238 kg (525 lbs)

Don't get me wrong.. I love the GS Adv 1200 - but it's HUUUUGE (yeah yeah I know - that's what she said).. Anyone who has seen the long way down - say the number of times the big GS fell over.. The Yamaha here has numbers close to the GS Adv - not the standard model.. Obviously there isn't a comparo done yet with the Yammy - however there have been tons of comparo on the other big Adv bikes... 9 outta 10 reviews usually favor the KTM as the most dirt orientated and best bet if you wanna go offroad.. Those kind of reviews are what led me to get the KTM... I love mine, it's a great bike and it makes a pretty all good purpose bike. However, the bit about it being good offroad ..... was made for folks with more offroad capability than I... Not that I have that much offroad experience, but I would like to think I do ok... Lets, just say that the KTM is ... errrr.. heavy to pick up...

So why I like the yamaha - and if I needed a street bike/tourer it would probably be near the top, but based upon my experience with the KTM - I wouldn't plan on taking offroad.. I like the idea of japanese reliablity - but with those kinds of stats I don't see myself doing a swap... That and the price tag for the ST is probably going to be around the same $$ as regular GS (not the Adv), so it's not exactly a bargain or worth it for me to trade in the KTM...

IMHO, way too many people buy the big bikes thinking they can be dirt bikes. They aren't. Yes, in the hands of capable riders, they can do it. But who wants to ride dirt on a big heavy bike all day?

Conversely, who wants to do a long distance ride on a small 450? When I went to James Bay, there were several days when I wanted a 1200GS BAD! I wouldn't dream of doing that ride on my 450.

So - the big bikes are ideal as adventure touring bikes. And I believe that is the market they are aimed at. I'd like to have one - someday I plan on riding to Deadhorse and/or ride the TransLab. Perfect bike for that!

Doesn't this bike have ABS that you can't turn off? I don't know jack about riding offroad yet, or ABS for that matter, but I've heard that those two don't mix
