Best Tires for 75dirt 25road
Hey guys,
Another best of thread....
What are you guys running for DS tires? I was thinking of the Dunlop D606 but I'm starting to wonder about on-road performance?
Here are the options I'm considering.
Dunlop D606
Mefo Explorer
Pirelli MT21
Continental Twinduro TKC80
Mitas E-09
Let me know what you think.

Re: Best Tires for 75dirt 25road
Contis wore out extremely quickly on an xr650l, were great while they lasted. I’m personally more concerned with performance off-road and end up going slow and easy on the road to preserve tires and rest for the next dirt section. “The dirt is for racing, the road is for getting there.”

I like the 606 on the rear although noisey. The tkc 80s last a long time on the front for us. Never tried the tkc80 rear. Dunlop front cupped rather quickly.
+1 on wanting off-road performance.

Any experience with the Mitas E O9's?

Using an alt front tire may be the way to go.

Re: Best Tires for 75dirt 25road
Pirelli MT21 front tire, Dunlop D606 rear has been my "true dualsport" tire set up. It works reasonably well offroad and isn't destroyed instantly by riding on the road.
That what I have currently on my DR650. When the rear is wore out, I'm thinking about putting a Pirelli MT43 on. I used to run those on my old KTM. Gave great traction in most offroad conditions and wore like iron. (though they are trialish, if you are a ham fisted throttle twister you probably wont like them...)

The mt21 also cupped badly on my 650l but I think I ran some low pressure on the road so maybe my bad.
Re: Best Tires for 75dirt 25road
I knew you weren't done
I've run 606s on several DS bikes and been happy with them. IMHO more of a 50/50 tire.
I also ran the cheap, but effective, 80/20 tire- Trackmaster II on my tagged dirt bikes.
Just ordered TKCs for my CB500
Jay seems to have an issue with cupping- low psi or out of balance?

Distanzia's for the win! (That was for Sam)
On a serious note, another vote for TKC80 front, the 606s cup out like crazy. I've been running a motoz on the rear of the DRz. Pros: it wears like iron! I bought it used, rode it through the KAT and put another couple hundred miles on it, shows almost no wear. With low(ish) pressure it hooked up surprisingly well on dirt and in mud. Just don't run it hard on the road with that low pressure.... on dry roads it stuck reasonably well (it took a while for people to catch up when I got flats....)
Cons: on wet, or even damp roads this tire is SKETCHY! If I ever wear it out I'll probably go back to a 606 or TKC80 rear.
