When it comes to the legality there are two things to consider. Most of the time you need to change a vehicle to the current state because your home state won't allow you to have an out of state address on your registration. SD allows you to do this because of how they classify the title. Therefore it is legally registered to a MD address with an SD title. Perfectly legal.

The second is a little less straight forward. In reality you can say the bike travels with you as you travel and in order to make it easy, you register it in SD to avoid having to reregister the bike every time you move.
I get that you can legally plate your bike in SD and that it's cheaper and easier etc.
My point was that if you're living in MD with it, you are required to title it here, and register it here if you wish to operate it on the street.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not preaching, I just posted because I didn't want guys to be misled and think they would never have a problem with it. Catch the wrong cop on the wrong day and you may regret it.
Sure, that could happen. I drove my car here for two years with California plates on it and had been pulled over for various thing in that time. Only one did I get a ticket and never was I asked about my plates. I paid close to $300 for California reg right before I moved and I wasn't about to pay another $200 plus the value tax on the car until someone made me.

If it makes you nervous you can definitely get it registered here but it is expensive for something you will only be riding in the boonies once in a while between trails.

I wasn't sure if I would even ride on the road much when I did mine so I wanted a low barrier of entry to find out if I liked it.

I also thought that. Not so.

OK--So the WR450 has a Florida title, which in no way shape or form implies "off-road only", "dirtbike", "closed course"...etc
All it says is "Motorcycle"

Great right?--
Apparently not. I sent all the applications, title, and $$ to the Glen Burnie MVA mail in title unit. Several weeks later I got all the original paperwork and title back. The clerk had written "This is a Dirtbike" and included an additional application for titling an off-road, ATV, snowmobile, moped, scooter! $5 additional fee and they give you some kind of decal to be placed on the back of the bike.

I don't know how exactly they knew about the bike's non-street status, but they did! I am not sure what my next move will be. The bike does have all the street legal gear on it, and just for shits I may try to run it through MVA inspection...

Or do that SD/VT thing.

May want to try visiting either the Frederick or Hagerstown MVA in person to see if they will process the title. If they say no, you may be able to at least have a discussion as to why. I think that one of the letters in the VIN can identify a bike as off-road only. Also as you mentioned, maybe walking in with a valid inspection might help.

+1 get a Maryland state inspection FIRST (got mine at JT Motorsports) then do the walk in at Frederick or Westminster with your Fla title & insurance info.

Interesting.....I think the VIN does give it away? In PA you need current reg and insurance to get an inspection. But then again getting a "dirt bike" tagged is waaaaay easier.

Move to PA

FWIW, I got a street legal title on a 1982 CR500 at Frederick.

Interesting. I didnt know you COULD mail all that stuff in.

Unless MD just changed how they are doing things. Like maybe NOW they are doing a VIN edit.

More reason to go get a EuroTrash bike.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time with the title. Not that I needed it but this does reinforce my opinion of keeping my shit tagged in Florida. Speaking if which, I do still have the Florida tag that was on that bike....
