good better best tires knobbys knobbies

Post by Bork » Sat Apr 23, 2011 10:21 pm

Hope I'm not opening up a can of worms. And thought I'd put in a bunch of key words, for future searches. I didn't have much luck in search. (or I'm not the sharpest) Anyhow, I've run teraflex, are they any good around here? In Fl there is soft sand most everywhere :fitz: and so up here, it seems opposite.(rock/boulders and did I mention rocky gardens?) I dont ride pavement much.

MT-43 Trials Tire - nothing else needs be said

although, in deep mud they suck.

In the mountains, the trials tire really shines.

Terraflex suck here man, the rocks are really hard on them and traction sucks

try the Maxxis IT, Kenda Trakmasters, but like Kyler said a rear radial trials tire is the absoulute best....ever!

Never had a trials tire, but I use the Dunlop 606 on my KLX. It did great in the mud and rocks at Green Ridge, although I forgot to air it down. It's also a great tire on the road, but probably won't last more than 4k miles or so.

Big fan of the MT-43 trials tire (non-radial and DOT legal).
However not that good with mud.
If not ready to jump on the trials band wagon or just like to run knob tires I find the MT-16 offers plenty of knob to dig however offers a tall sidewall for a knob tire so when aired down they fold around rocks and roots like the trials tire with less risk of pinching than most knob tires I have tried. I run the MT-16 on the front when running the MT-43 on the back. Seems to work well for me.

Wow, I'm learning. How much air in the trials tires? Rims dont get damaged on big rocks? I was going to replace my almost shot teraflex with a new one I have, for the mountain ridge ride, (thanks for saving me the embarrassment), but now I see, I should wait till after MR event & check out everyones skins.

figure I'd give a different POV, i have not used trials tire when its time to buy I just cant see gobs of throttle still hooking up so i go with some knarly knobby.

on a XR600 i would mount a Chen Shing C-755 530/18 on the rear with 10 psi mud, rocks or anything they hook up killer, wear great and are cheap

or for race type stuff the Pirelli MT-16 is my current favorite with anything heavy walled on the front, guys like the bridgestone 59s fronts, i like pirelli mt 44s and 18s but they and most tire manufactuers have changed all their numbers in the last couple years. The dunlop D-752 in the 120/18 size was a great race/traction tire but was soft and chunked in rocks and generally wore out fast, the new version is the D-952 which is the same pattern with a harder compound.
for XR600 dual sport / off road riding
1st C755
2nd D-952
3rd MT-16

for racing or serious mud MT-16

In the rocks, dents and bends just happen to me no matter what I do

Best knobbies I have tried are Kenda Millville. Crazy good traction in mud and loam. They are a pure off road tire.

Old Dunlop 756's were pretty good too.

I have heard good things about Pirelli MT-16s too.

MT43's are really really tall, which helps a lot with rim dings. Run 6-10psi in them. Fantastic traction but require riding somewhat differently because of it.

For a true dual sport tire the Dunlop D606 is really hard to beat. I prefer how it rides and how long it lasts compared to the MT43 personally, ymmv.

There seem to be a few Maxxis ITs. Which one? dessert?
.
On edit; Update, after much research & debate, I ordered a M16. cant wait to try it. :roost: Now to get inspected with old dot teraflex, before swapping it out!
