DRZ400S handlebar clamps

Post by phoo »

Does anyone have the top clamps for holding the handlebars on, either for sale or borrow? DRZ400S.

I didn't realize the front end I bought didn't have the top clamps for the handlebars, and the handlebar mount is integrated into the upper triple clamp so I can't move my bars from the SM to the S.

I would be done already if I just put the dirt rims on the SM front end like last time, but that would be too easy...

Thanks,

Patrick

IIRC, These are 7/8" bars? What is the bolt spacing? Wonder if a clamp off something else would work. I could check the XR and TTR. I think I have some old 30mm tall bar risers I could check the top clamps for too. Ohhh, those were generic. Very likely you could use those complete (if just the tops don't work) but would raise your bars obviously. I'll go dig them up and take a pic.

Ok, the risers I have are for a 7/8" bar and bolt spacing between 31-35mm (39-43mm from outside edge of bolt to outside edge of bolt). They do not have caps but you could use them upside down as such. LMK if they'll work for you. Would need slightly shorter screws. These may have been from my old DRZ.

Edit: The XR top caps look to be about 29mm center to center spacing. The TTR are about 33mm. I didn't take either off for exact measurements, just eyeballing w/ the calipers held over the bolts. I can remove and take better measurements if needed.

Edit2: If the SM top clamp you have is for the right size bars (I'm assuming you have 7/8" bars on it too) and the one pc clamp itself would fit one side but just the side to side spacing is different, you could cut it into 2 pcs. (well, 3 if you take the large center chunk out.) Then buy a nice new anodized clamp machined from bar stock (vs likely cast orig) for your SM for $20-25

I'm still waiting for the lazy F's at the office to get in and get me some information so I'm just sitting here, killing time, spitballing ideas.

I'll measure the spacing and let you know, and you reminded me I have a Rox riser that I need to check out. Thanks!

You're a genius! So, you mentioned XR, so I went to see if my kid's XR clamps would work, then I realized I have a garage stuffed with bikes to steal parts from, and *BAM* it turns out that the clamps from a naked first-gen SV fit perfectly! Nobody tell my wife that I'm stealing parts from her bike, okay? ;)

But to answer a question / implied question from your post, the SM has ProTaper bars on bolt-on risers, so not only to the bars not fit (boo!), the clamps don't fit, and I can't move the risers to the other triple clamp like I was planning to. But, I'm back in business, so woohoo!

Please tell my wife:)

Yeah, I knew the SM had those bolt on risers w/ the one pc top clamp thing. I think(?) they came w/ 7/8" bars stock but lots of folks swap them out to 1-1/8. You would have been able to overnight a set of 7/8 to 1-1/8 adapters to fit your SM bars on the S triple.

Oh? I didn't know such things exist.

Most hits were actually to go down from 1 1/8" to 7/8", but here it is --

Another thing I wish I'd known about earlier. :) It would be nice to be able to just move the bars between front ends. :) But worst-case scenario is I can use what I have for now, then switch to that afterward.

Thanks,

Woowoo! Ellicott City has them in STOCK! WOOOOO! This actually saves me a ton of work, not having to move stuff between bars.

lol, ECM added a nice "convenience charge." Everywhere has it for exactly the same price, $35.99, but they were suddenly $39.99. Whatever, it was like same day shipping. :-D

Nice! FWIW w/ clamp-on grips its not too hard to swap stuff between bars (still a time suck) but not having to do anything is even better!
