DRZ 400 rpm/gearing/speed

Post by Laoch »

Ok, it's a KLX400 but a DRZ. :deal:

I'm running 15/47 and it seems to top out at 55-60 mph. Just kind of starts to hesitate.
Runs awesome strong up to that point and does well off road.
I'm wondering is that normal based on the bike and gears.

I put a TTO tiny tach on it and at 55-60 mph I'm running about 3k rpm. Seem right?
I know those tachs are nor very accurate.

It's piped and probably jetted by PO, will that make a difference?

I ride mostly back roads, where it does well, but for the occasional stretch where I want to run faster, it ain't happening. If it's normal, then I'll live with it.

Here is a link to some good info on DRZ gearing. I tried 14/47 for trail riding, but it was painful on the street. I went back to stock 15/44 for best compromise dirt / street.

Mmmm. Good info. I might have a 44 laying around. If not I'll order one up and swap 'em out.

DRZ400E stock gearing is 14/47. DRZ400S stock is 15/44. Internal gear ratios are the same for both models.

With 15/44 sprockets on my 2000 400E, topped out at 85mph (GPS indicated) after a 1 mile run, RPM not measured.

Based on the math, at the same RPM, the 14/47 gearing would have yielded 74mph (Factor = .874)

Your bike has a problem. My DRZ has 15/47 and does 90mph.

How old is the bike and how many miles? When was the last time you cleaned your carb, cleaned your petcock filter, cleaned your airfilter, and checked your valves?

What Billygoat said..... or most likely jetting if it's been like that since you've had it or put the pipe on it.

Ummmm...gonna do that next. :lol2:

You guys are obviously right. It's either a jetting or a valve issue.
