It depends. I generally run non DOT tires because I rarely ride on the road. I believe most serious offroad guys also do this.
But some guys will occasionally use their plated bikes to do at least a little bit of road miles. They will sometimes have DOT tires because if for no other reason most non dot tires are pretty soft and will quickly be destroyed on the road.

If you want DOT a MT16 on the front and a MT43 on the back aren't bad choices.

MT16 is my favorite tire, they last a long time for knobbies.

ok...so I was able to go through the rat's nest of wiring that one of the previous owners put in place....at one point the bike was street legal.....

two issues that came up are:
1. the front brake doesn't turn on the brake light, just the rear brake. the front doesn't have the pressure sensitive banjo bolt. is that ok for inspection?
2. in the box o' parts I received from the previous owner, there are flush mount turn signals that go on the rear. there are no front turn signals. is that ok for inspection?

thanks.

Some inspectors are strickt about chain guards. If your bike did not come with one, have proof that it was not designed for guard. Some require the side reflectors , front & back. Spark arrestor also.

I zip tied a streetbike chainguard onto the top of that little chain guard that my KTM has. The chain rubbed against the zip tie so it wouldn't have lasted more than a mile on the street but it passed! :ride:
