beejaytee wrote: Thu Jun 01, 2017 1:34 pm The key is to tag the log with the front wheel just after you start to wheelie. If you don't do this the wheel almost always slaps down and causes you to loose a lot of momentum.

If you tap the front wheel the log will transfer energy causing the front to float up so when the rear hits it levels the front and rear as you clear the log.
Yep, that's one of the techniques that was taught at the ryan young trials school. I don't think I've had the opportunity to use it yet (there's never a log on the trail when you want one). I've gotten over lots of logs without it but it did make log hopping a lot easier on the vintage yamaha trials bike I rode a little bit at the school. After I've applied it once in real life I plan to start calling myself a trials technique based rider... ;) It's the only technique that my tiny brain retained from the school in the "that looks practical for regular riding" file.
Use caution using the word "trials". If used more than once per post Skinny J will have you banned to the silly gay trials rider fan club section.

While I'm sure it's not universally true it seems to me most trials riders spend more time practicing than I do. That's a good thing to me and I'd like to be able to find the time/place to get some regular practice in. I feel unworthy to be included in the silly gay trials rider fan club section right now. :lol2:

If you want log crossing practice, you need to get up to Boom Boom's place if he offers. There are logs like every 20' there :lol2:

Yeah, I remember you describing the place. I would have a couple logs in my little back yard (I think I'm on 0.17 acres, maybe even less) if I had an electric bike...

Cool!
It would be very useful to have some practice from time to time :)
Is it far from DC?

About 2 hours from DC depending on time of day and the alignment of planets.

It really is awesome to be able to practice. I know most of the time we just ride some trails and have fun. But it is really cool to take the time to practice the same log/hill/whatever.

Last time I was at Taskers my riding pals had to leave early. I stayed a little longer and practiced hopping some big rocks (big to me, not in the amazing trials sense). It was great to ingrain a tiny bit of technique and really does wonders for confidence.

Practice party at Jed's!!!
