Re: Oct 9th - DS Ride For MS
Did the gps version of the long route. Phil and Jack met me at the house round 9am, then we went straight out to Jt's. Apparent issues with the Klr getting there... my shorts were ridin' up
so I stood up briefly at 65mph then sat down to a nice "almost" tank slapper
that freaked Jack and phil out. Got to Jt's, filled up tanks and hit the route @10. We made 2 stops between there and lunch, roughly 15mins. ea., overal mph average came out to 30mph. Didn't get to the lunch stop til 2:30. By the time we left there an hour had passed. Got back down to rt.30 following the route @ about 430. At which point we realized we were lacking gas
Followed the route further south to gas at which point phil needed to start heading home, so we all pretty much called it a day figuring that we wouldn't make it back to JT's til 6 or so.
We didn't miss any turns til we turned off of tower rd. onto 77, a moving truck was blocking my next turn so I went one rd. further then hung it..which ended up adding to the route a mile or two. From that point we were pretty good til the pa. parks. The turn off of Buena vista onto 16 can be a slight PITA although(getting onto 16 with the traffic). A few portions in the park where the road splits in 4 different directions had me guessing which one to pick since the gps only recognized one and the others weren't on the map half the time. Easy enough fixes. Although we got pretty turned around at one point where I made the same wrong turn about 3 times in a row, within a few feet of the intersection
I was so turned around from looping the park that I had no flippin' clue where we were. So I continued further down the road in the direction I believed was right, then pulled over to ask Jack if he had tracks on his gps from us already being on that road. His reply, "Nope". So we kept going
Problem solved and we were back on track
Overall thoughts... Phil..You did a fantastic job picking those roads. Jack, Phil and I have been up there I don't know how many times and never hit 90% of what you dished out. Nice continuous dirt/gravel too. Nothing technical. Some of the portions coming back in part 3 I thought looked like they were wide enough for some awesome rally racing car, bike and hack.
I'm not going to go into great detail on here...we'll talk when we all meet to discuss it. But I definitely think we're going to have to cut some stuff out if we're going to make this as "newbie" friendly as the flyer, etc. makes it out to be. The roads are awesome and cake for a newbie..it's the mileage I worry about, and cutting out part 2 would suck.
It's a shame that Jt's is in frederick and not cascade

Re: Oct 9th - DS Ride For MS
Double checking my tracks vs. the actual route.... added 5 miles pavement when we missed the turn after tower rd. (took part 3 instead heading the opposite direction then merged back into part 1 mid way) , had 4 turn arounds where we missed our turn and went back for it (pretty small mistakes, 4 turn arounds turning the wrong way over and over in one intersection (I'm an idiot), 1 added 14 mile loop ---oopsssssss.
I thought that was a loop that was put into the actual route, but apparently it was a loop added by moi
Sorry Phil and Jack.
Guess it's a good thing there isn't a rally wv. this year. I doubt I'd finish and anyone including myself would know where I was.
It's apparent my navigational skills are

Nothing to be sorry about Joe... I had a grand time today.. Love the route Bucho. Like Code says, it might be a bit too ambitious for the newb crowd. We skipped some of the return and I got home around 7. I left my house at 0820. Something like 290 clicks.
I am going to use it for my own all day loop/ I love the long rides.

Re: Oct 9th - DS Ride For MS
I played around with the route in MapSource and can get it shorter. We would be giving up the longer loop through the watershed and cutting out the loop mid-way in parts 1.code wrote:Overall thoughts... Phil..You did a fantastic job picking those roads. Original
Part 1: 69.0
Part 2: 50.3 (the good stuff)
Part 3: 52.8
Total: 172.1; Parts 1 & 2 w/o lunch: 121.8 and w/lunch ~148
Revised
Part 1: 52.1
Part 2: 50.3 (the good stuff)
Part 3: 52.8
Total: 155.2; Parts 1 & 2 w/o lunch: 104.9 and w/lunch ~133
to put things in perspective, the spring ride was about 50 miles (morning ride) and that is all many people did - we finished at noon, starting at 1000. The newbs loved it; the more experienced riders thought it was too short. Most peeps spent as much time BSing at the Main Cup as they did riding.
For discussion
Cut out part 2 entirely and save that for another trip starting further north. Change part 1 to end at the lunch spot; only include the part 2 section from the lunch back to part 3 and relabel it part 2. Personally I think the beginners may object to the length even at 130 miles as Code has said above.

IMHO, I wouldn't go into great depth in this thread discussing the route changes, etc. Prolly something we should do in the rams thread so that this thread doesn't turn into 20pgs. or so of blah. Meet wed. / thurs. to discuss? Say 6/7pm@ ew becks?
secondly... JT's is doin' a lot for us, so it may make sense to give back by leaving @10 and returning by 3. People aren't goin' to come back if the ride ends @ 5/6. They'll prolly do exactly what we did and peel off @ convenient locations for heading home rather then back to Jt's. Not to mention, by a later return, you're sayin' to Jim..stay open later to give us discounts, drink, etc. Granted, it would benefit him some, but how much by having employees stay later?
ps. I cut the route down last night, not set on what I did. 55-75mph rt.15 for x amount would blow.

Re: Oct 9th - DS Ride For MS
In case you're looking for feedback, I'm definitely down for a longer ride.
