American wins Dakar

Post by Bucho »

Since its start in 1979, no American has ever won the Dakar.
After 41 years we have TWO champions!

American Brabec wins the bikes class aboard a Honda.

American Currie wins the side-by-side class in an American CanAm.

This has been interesting to follow this year. Hadn't watched it in years. Sort of like Nicky Hayden back in MotoGP - I was rooting for an American to win but I hate Honda so I was internally conflicted. (too many squids on them in my formative years has forever scarred me.)
FWIW, Can-Am is canadian.

Funny, I too have an irrational dislike of Honda.

CanAm is (north) American!

Very cool to have Americans winning this thing.

A lot of people around my age started on Hondas (e.g., I started on a 78 xr75) and have soft spots for them. I've had 6 of 7 of them. All of them were great bikes. It seems weird that someone would dislike them.

Same here, handful of us waiting for David to bring his ‘77 XR 75 out so we can all ride
Someone always had dad’s mower fuel can, good times. Kid shows up with a Suzuki DS 80 even a shorter bike, bases were covered

I was never lucky enough to be around dirtbikes when I was younger. Closest was a family friend had a Honda ATC. Would let my older brother ride it. He was 11-11, I was about 7-8 and would get to ride on the back.

I heard that Phil! yeah that XR 75 and DS 80 probably taught half the 3rd-5th grade class in the neighborhood. :lol2:
We also had someone with a 74 yz 80 and I still talk to him, and at the time a very fast RM 80. It was cops and robbers, need to trap the robber in our local sand dunes. Robber had to be two up

There was a ds80 near me too but it seemed like it was mostly not running. My brother and I also went in together on an 80 cr80. The kid we bought it from was still in a full back brace from being hurt while riding the cr. That, plus the light switch nature of the power delivery, had me trading my half of the cr and owning 100% of the xr. :screwy:
