There is a thread over on Thumper Talk about "Ice Screws"

Everytime I see that thread I think of my ex-wife  sure wish they'd change the topic title :harhar:

I didn't check the TT thread yet, but... anyone ever ride with screws? It's a lot of fun and worth the effort. The couple of times I've done it I just used sheetmetal screws. Probably not the best for true ice, but for frozen trail it worked great. With snow on the ground and the trees bare, it's fun to just go any which way you please in the woods.

Screws would've been great on the frozen trails at Wickys World a couple of weeks ago.

Hey Motojunky, how bad does that destroy the tire? Could you put some screws into the knobbies on your old knobby that you know you are going to replace in the spring time anyway?

If I lived further north w/ more severe winters I'd probably do it.

Not at all. You can put screws in a tire when you need them and take 'em out and keep using the tire when you're done. It just leaves small holes in the knob (they pretty much close up). On a high HP bike I could see it leading to tearing knobs off eventually, but I did it on a XR200 so I never had that problem.

We don't see winters worthy of buying real studded tires, but the sheetmetal screws are a cheap way to have some fun in the snow and ice.
