Play my game

Post by Teethgrinder »

DAMN guys...
You're leaving for a week-long, long distance trip. Not involving any real off-road work, just a highways and byways voyage. You will have access to lodging for the most part, including laundry machines when freeloading at people's homes. You don't have side-case luggage because you weren't thrifty enough to acquire them in time, so you have a tankbag, a tailbag, and a back pack. You may camp, so a small tent for shelter is already on board. Add things to each list!

Things I would never go on a long trip without:

Things I would take, but could go without for the sake of traveling light:

A well funded debit card or a credit card with some headroom would be my highest priority. I travel light.

The list really varies on what kind of terrain you're traveling, but given your description...

Never leave home without:
Ear Plugs
Bandana
Leatherman
Zip Ties
Electrical Tape
A short length of safety wire
Spare fuses
Tools - all your common wrenches, screwdriver, sparkplug wrench, pliers, etc.
Maps
heavy-duty plastic bags to wrap your fresh clothes in.
Nitrile rubber gloves for any mechanical issue - but I have a freakish skin allergy to oil. However, a good guest doesn't leave greasy fingerprints on their hosts bathroom.
Chain lube
Hydration pack (I can't recommend Camelback anymore -- they fund Sierra Club, who work to deny off-road riding)
Chapstik

Given enough room, I'd take
An iPod or XM radio
GPS
Maps
If there's room in the luggage, go to REI and score a dry sack for your fresh clothes.
Rainsuit
Rubber boots
Over-gloves (Aerostitch sells waterproof over-gloves)

Never leave home without:
Ear Plugs
Check.
Bandana
Always. If only for emergency bank or stagecoach robberies.
Leatherman
Always always. It has saved me, and others, many a time. I'd rather leave my foot at home.
Zip Ties
Check
Electrical Tape
Check
A short length of safety wire
Hmmmm... maybe.
Spare fuses
At store on the way out.
Tools - all your common wrenches, screwdriver, sparkplug wrench, pliers, etc.
Stock tools plus extras in bag.
Maps
Check
heavy-duty plastic bags to wrap your fresh clothes in.
Check
Nitrile rubber gloves for any mechanical issue - but I have a freakish skin allergy to oil. However, a good guest doesn't leave greasy fingerprints on their hosts bathroom.
Nahhh.
Chain lube
Check
Hydration pack (I can't recommend Camelback anymore -- they fund Sierra Club, who work to deny off-road riding)
Check. But I'm not throwing away my Camelbacks. I already spent money on them, so they're in 'til they're broken.
Chapstik
Check. Minty flavor.

Given enough room, I'd take
An iPod or XM radio
Check, but no way to charge on the fly yet, and my Ipod is getting pretty old.
GPS
Couldn't swing it yet. Sure would be nice.
Maps
Check.
If there's room in the luggage, go to REI and score a dry sack for your fresh clothes.
Hefty Bag will have to do.
Rainsuit
Check. Got a new one.
Rubber boots
Over-gloves (Aerostitch sells waterproof over-gloves)
Not this trip, but they're on my list of things to get.
I also got a nice new jacket and pants today at Bob's. I picked up a day-glo Olympia Bushwacker 3/4 length jacket, and a pair of really nice Rev-it pants that were marked down significantly enough to justify the jacket. Now I will look like a short, hairy, fugly Ken.

I don't have much moto touring expierience but I've done lots of backpacking and bicycle touring so I'll give it a shot.

Hmmm...7 days...all pavement on a new bike...late spring...some camping...

I would wear:
helmet and regular leather gloves
Aerostitch Darien
Joe Rocket Ballistic 5.0 Pants
light fleece pullover
tshirt
cargo pants
sport tour type moto boots
good, thick socks

In my pockets:
wallet (with ID, cash, "gas" credit card, "big" credit card for emergencies, up to date insurance cards!)
multitool
camera
lighter
phone/mp3 player

I would pack:
Tent
Sleeping bag
Thermarest pad

safety wire, zip ties, electrical tape tucked into stock tool kit
small squeeze bottle with "dropper" type top filled with ATF for chain lube
tire plug kit, ultra compact bicycle tire pump, tire gauge
2 clean rags, a couple of paper towels, a pair of latex gloves

two bottles of water
energy drink
some kind of snack

3 pairs of socks
3 pairs of underwear
2 tshirts
small towel
tooth brush, tooth paste, tums, advil
if enough room- a pair of cargo shorts and tennis shoes

Between fuses, electrical tape, safety wire and zip ties; I think safety wire has been the most useful for me. I usually carry a small 10 foot roll.

Oops, I forgot my maps! Oh well, might be more fun without them... :deal:
