Regarding the pilot circuit, ultimately, your just looking for a crisp off idle response; one that doesn't feel "airy" (lean) or "flat" (rich). Difficult starting can also indicate an improper pilot circuit jetting.

I weld all the time and this isn't something I've heard about. I usually use alcohol to remove grease and metal prep so now I'll be sure to keep it that way.

I'm used to long days from the car track days. Get up at 4:30am and get home around 8:30pm usually. With a couple drivers it would be easier to add in the extra time for the longer haul I suppose.
